In spring of 2000, Denyse created her first of The Belly Button Buddies, Her use of vivid colours and thickly layered paint make these images seem to jump of the canvas. So generous are her brush strokes, that at times the sculpted acrylic has extended off the edge of her creations by more than 3 inches. It is almost impossible to resist the urge to reach out and touch them.

The Belly Button Buddies began to grow beyond the canvas when Nicole Haddock, writer and performer, was challenged by her mother to write a poem for a painting done by Denyse that was featured on an her invitation for her solo art show. Three days before Denyse's show was to open, Nicole went to the gallery to read the poems to her. Nicole decided to actually become a Belly Button Buddy and perform, rather than read her works. Gallery patrons gathered around. The concept of mixing poetry, paintings and performance emerged. It was decided that Nicole wouldperform her poetry three days later at Denyse's art show.

Since that first gallery performance, The Belly Button Buddy, surrounded by paintings, has performed in schools, libraries, art galleries, theaters at conventions and on television. The venture has blossomed and The Belly Button Buddies can be enjoyed in many different mediums, including books with audio CD's, a music CD, DVD, posters, collectible cards, pewter jewelery, videos and clothing Denyse has an extensive portfolio of The Belly Button Buddies which can be seen on request.
